When the guys are sent to buy pants...
Welcome SITS friends, to my little corner of the blog o' sphere. I'm very excited to be selected as today's featured blogger. I look forward to sharing a chuckle or a perhaps an emotional connection in which you might say to yourself, "Are you kidding me, I look at the world in the same twisted way!" I know I've had that feeling reading your blogs and am continually amazed over all the things, we perfect strangers have in common.
Last night the whole family went to 'Kohl's' to get the kids something dark and formal to wear to the graveside service for my husbands Aunt. If this were just any graveside service I wouldn't mind if the kids just wore a pair of clean jeans and a nice dark shirt but this is at 'Arlington National Cemetary'... Where the guard that protects the Unknown Soldier has every inch of his uniform inspected before He can report for duty!
My kids don't get a lot of opportunities to dress in formal wear. We don't attend church... We don't 'gussy' up to frequent the likes of places known as 'The Club'... 'The League'... or 'The Marina'... We enjoy 'The Theatre'... However, considering the price of a ticket we're just as happy taking in a show performed by high school students or the community playhouse... Both of which don't mind if you wear jeans.
So the point is... Every time we have a dressy event to attend, the kids need new clothes. It's a shame that these formal events can't be all lumped together before the kids grow into another size but considering this is a funeral we're attending, perhaps I should be careful what I wish for.
When we got to the store I pointed the guys in the direction of 'Young Men's Dress Slacks' and my daughter and I hit the 'Young Ladies Department'... It didn't take long for us to find a simple black dress. We finished up at the girls dressing room and crossed a couple of aisles over to 'Young Mens' but couldn't find my husband and son anywhere. My husband had mentioned that he might look for some slacks for himself so we ventured to the other side of the store where the 'Men's Department' is located.
When I found my husband he was standing there with my son and both of them had the biggest grins on their faces. It looked as if they'd just pulled golden tickets out of a 'Wonka' bar! OR as I was about to confirm... Made a hasty yet poor decision on a pair of pants for my son. They both looked at me and said, "Found the pants! The VERY FIRST PAIR he/I tried on!" Now, I've been pants shopping with my son and I KNOW the chances of finding a pair of pants that fit after trying on 10 pairs is slim to none (which is pretty much a description of his waist size.) SO, I did what any Mom would do. I said, "Oh yeah, go try 'em on for me." Of course I got the, "But I told you they fit!" and the eye roll as he lumbered over to the dressing room. It wasn't long before my son returned wearing a pair of pants that while long enough to adequately touch the tops of his shoes, had a crotch that ended somewhere just above his knees. "No way Bud!... Let's go back and look for a pair of pants that fit!" More eye rolls and long drawn out sighs... But we did eventually find him a pair of slacks that were issued with the strict instruction that he couldn't grow any taller in the next 48 hrs.... After that it's likely he won't have another reason to dress up until that pair with the long crotch fit him perfectly.
*2 yrs. have gone by since I posted this and I STILL don't trust either of them when it comes to buying clothes. Of course, if it wasn't for my they'd never shop and would probably look like hobos.

I feel bad! I laughed. I am sorry to hear that you have a funeral to attend, but the description of the guys picking out the first pair of pants they found made me chuckle.
It's all about the laughter M... I'm glad I could make you chuckle!
Hilarious - witha capital "H"!!!
Thanks for the laugh!
My boys absolutely hate trying on clothes. My oldest has a system for seeing if pants fit: he holds them up to his waist, and if they touch the tops of his shoes they are long enough. My girls, on the other hand, love trying on clothes and don't want to leave the store!
I am like you in the way that I find the humor in everything. Makes things much easier to get through. Cute story!
Men really need help with this don't they.
I mean they know we're gonna make them try them on why don't they just get it right the 1st time then we don't have to make them look like the idiots they are!
Happy SITS Day to you!! Isn't it a blast taking kids (and husbands) shopping?
LOL...I am soooo in the same boat. Just took my DS shopping for some new school clothes...sent him in to try on the pants, told him I wouldn't go in with him, but he had to come out and show me...after a long time, I asked how it was going, and he said he was done, they all fit...of course when we got home I had him try them on again...and two pair had to go back...geez...
that sounds like my hubby taking the boys. they're clueless!
Men's and women's clothing are sized differently. In men's/boy's clothes, it "fits" if they're able to put in on.
Funny post!
LOL! I just recently posted about shopping with my teenage daughter. I'm telling you, I think I'd rather get my teeth pulled without anesthesia than go shopping with anyone blood related to me.
I laughed to, that is so typical guy shopping.
Sorry for your loss, but apparently you know your guys well enough to know there is no way they can be trusted with even the simplest errand that involves shopping for clothes.
This is too funny... It's a bit like when I trust my boyfriend to clean or cook, lol. You just know it's not getting done right! Congrats on your SITS day. :)
This is the kind of thing that makes me glad I just have a daughter. I think.... I suppose when she's older, shopping will be a nightmare in the other direction.........
Cheers!
Ha! Love this post. Just stopping by from SITS today! Love your blog so far...off to read the 3rd post.
Ahh yes, men and clothes. I think my husband still has clothes from like 10 years ago. Why is it many of them just don't care? And who takes the flack for them looking bad? Us, their wives and mothers, because we should know better than not to let them leave the house looking like a hobo.
I'm so glad I don't have boys to shop with. I think it would be just too much for me to handle!!!!!!!!!!
Justine :o )
That is too funny. I am glad that My boys are still young enough that I just pick out all of their clothes for them. Not looking forward to the day when they actually choose their own clothes. yikes.
It's not just men that hate trying on clothes. I have never liked it. When I was a teen, my mom would shop for me and bring the clothes home. If they fit the next morning when I put them on I would tear off the tags and wear them, if they didn't my mom would take them back to the store and that was that. I still can't stand trying on clothes and normally don't. That means I have a lot of take back/returns.
I get scared too especially with ties...and my son is 17 and wants to go by himself...I cringe
This is funny. I only have girls, but I know what its like to suffer through trying on clothes :)
Yes the guys need 'guidance' but girls....they can be so picky and difficult! That's how it is in our family anyway.
I can totally relate to this, made me smile. :)
Most men/boys cannot be trusted with any shopping without strict written criteria. Even then it's a crap shoot.
Okay I laughed outloud at your description of how the pants looked when he tried them on. Figures that a guy would assume that the pants would fit just fine.
It's the same way in my house. :-)
Men are the hunters, we are the gather-ers. Leave the shopping to the females!
I don't know if grabbing the first thing, unsuitable or not, is worse than my husband who looks forever, finds something he likes then debates over it until they no longer make it, is worse. Either way it is just easy to go buy it for them, or at least with them!
haha- niiiiice. I wish there was a picture to accompany his first choice...classic.
Men, what do you expect. Right?
Trying on clothes as a kid was awful. I don't really like it that much more now.
I would never trust my husband to buy anything for the boys that actually looked decent. Odds are he never even tried that first pair on. Very funny post.
I'm sorry about the funeral, but what a funny post. I'm impressed both you and your daughter had dresses picked out faster than the guys did. My husband's a good shopper for men's clothing (he's a lawyer and wears suits every day) but my boys, NOPE. They love ghetto gear. Anything flashy, shiny, or sparkly. lol
What is it with men and trying stuff on? My ex had more stuff with tags lying around because he was sure it would fit, and then bought it, brought it home and ... nope... didn't fit.
ARGH!
Cute post though!
very funny!
they almost got away with it, but you are the smart mom!
All four of my grandparents are buried at Arlington. And what amazing funerals they were. Just wow. And the shopping before hand...yeah, I can relate to that too...
So true - most men (and boys) just can't shop for clothes! But I know how it feels to get frustrated with trying on pants - I always have to try on at least ten pairs to find one that fits me. Sometimes I am tempted to just buy the first one I try on!
It must be in the male DNA. All males I know are the same way!
There is only one word to sum up this post:
Men!
(with an eye roll, of course)
that is funny . . I bet that is something I will have to look forward to, lol
Haha! I can definitely picture that!
I'm sorry to hear you lost your relative.
HAHAHAHA! Yeah I have two boys and a hubby so that will be triple for me when they start to get taller.
HAPPY SITS DAY AGAIN.
Did they really think they were going to get off that easy? lol.
funny! My husband refuses to try stuff on and just guesses. Then when we get home and they dont fit, he wants me to take them back for him.
Better remember that one for the future, too.
Men should never assist another male or female with picking out clothing unless the said male is gay, cause that is the only make that will pick out decent clothing.
Yeah, I've learned the hard way about not letting hubby pick out clothes for our girls. Maybe they "learned" about pairing plaid shorts with a polka dot skirt from Daddy.
OMG, this so SO true!! And - I just LOVE the follow-up comments on your posts! :)
happy SITS day!
Gotta say, you are brave! I would never send hubby out to pick clothes for anyone!
Love the fact that they were so proud of themselves!!! I didn't realize you had been blogging for so long!! Wow! impressive!
LOL...Men and shopping...an entertaining combination!
I don't trust my husband to dress my son when it comes to looking nice. That's my department. I am proud to say the hubby has improved since we've been married.
I am sooo with you with not trusting those men with trying on clothes... they have an "idea" on what they can wear and don't "need" to try on anything. So annoying when they then complain that "these pants don't fit". Well, duh... if you would of gone in and actually tried them on then maybe they would fit!
So what did your husband end up "finding" for himslef? LOL! Men. One track minds. Get in and get out.
ROFL!!!
I hope your enjoying your SITS Day!
I bet dad told them to say they tried it on! Ha!! Men just try to get it and get out as fast as they can. Too funny!
It could be worse. My husband came home with all sorts of Sean John stuff the last time he went shopping. Now my mom buys him clothing at every holiday (Father's Day, Birthday, Christmas) and he looks like a mini-my dad. I haven't decided which is worse. Yes, I have. The Sean John is definitely worse.
Good to know they've got you to keep them in line!
I bet a service at ANC is beautiful.
Good luck getting men to cooperate with shopping!
What a great story! I have to do all the shopping in my household too. Can't trust the boys.
Wow! 2 years! Have you been blogging sinc the dinosaurs were around :)?!
Just kidding!--that post is timeless! Men and shopping--it's just not a match made in heaven!
I don't know, Michelle...my husband comes home with clothes plastered with Winnie the Pooh and Lightning McQueen, which inevitably leads to a month's obsession with said character on his shirt.
I can relate! My son has a 30" waist and needs 36" length! We settle for 32 x 36. Great post; made me smile.
Ugggh...I think men are bling....only when they want to be....
LOL! I can so relate. My hubby has seriously forgotten how to dress himself. All of a sudden, I swear. I would *never* send him off to shop for clothes for the girls.
On a business trip recently, he came back with high heeled flip flops for each girl. They were kid flip flops (he did get that right), but seriously had a heel up to here on them! All summer long, the girls fallen all over the place. Tripped here, tripped there. Wobbly ankles everywhere! I've sinced helped them lose the shoes. But hubbs is gonna hear about that one for a while.
Sorry...didn't mean to blog on your comment thingy...you just reminded me...ha ha...sorry!
Happy SITS Day!
This is one of the reasons why men need women - fashion police!
LOL!!!
Now that the boys have all left home, their clothing choisces are their own. The temptaton is still strong though, to march them down to the menswear shop and dress them *properly*!!! :-)
I've lost plenty of money because my husband buys things on sale without trying them on. I feel your pain.
