About Me: I have two blogs I try to keep updated on a regular basis. The Paper Treehouse is what I consider my online diary and Preposterous Ponderings is a place for me to log some of the absurd thoughts that run through my head on any given day. I'm a Paper Artist and a consummate creative procrastinator... I do my best work under pressure... However, I'm completely vested in every project I take on. A couple of years ago I was called a 'Control Freak' and I've finally come to the conclusion it was a correct assessment of my personality and am working on ways to just breathe deep and 'Let Go'... It seems to be working.

I know funny when I see it... and damn, that's funny!
Hi!
In response to your Q: The fear of the dark may be related to the shelter. If it got very dark in the humane society and she was scared, it would just reinforce her fear.
You may want to talk to your vet about putting your dog on "Clomipramine" (brand name Clomicalm). It can be used to treat anixiety.
For fear of thunderstorms you may want to try this: When she's eating play a tape of thunderstorm very very very low. So low that she has no reaction. If she shows any fear or stress reaction, it's too loud. Turn it down. Do that for a week then turn the volume up a notch. Do that for a week, then turn it up a notch. She will associate the sound of the thunderstorm with a good thing. (eating) It is IMPERATIVE that you do this slowly.
You could do something similar with the darkness. Get a dimmer on a light and feed her (Don't do this at the same time as the thunderstorm thing. Do it after or before you've conquered thunderstorms). Dim the light a bit so that she's showing no reaction and then feed her. Do that for a week then dim the light another notch.. so on and so forth.
I would also recomend getting in touch with a behaviorist. Not a trainer but a behaviorist! Someone who has a degree in animal behavior. You can check out www.animalbehavior.org for Certified Applied Animal Behaviorists.
It will be the best money you ever spent, plus it will help you girl not live a life of fear!
